Playing the score

To play back your score, tap Play image.png which appears on the toolbar or command bar at the top of the screen. The score will play from the playhead position.

To set the playhead position, tap in the bar ruler just below the toolbar, where the bar numbers appear.

To audition a section of music, select it (see Selecting bars) and tap Play image.png . StaffPad will play only the music that is selected, and will stop at the end of the selection.

  Tip!

You can also quickly start playback by double tapping with your finger at any position along the bar ruler.

While your score plays, the Play icon turns into a Pause image.png icon. To stop playback, tap this icon.

To skip one bar backward or one bar forward during playback, tap Back image.png or Forward image.png . You can also use these icons to move the playhead while playback is stopped. Double-tap the Back icon to navigate to the beginning of the score; double-tap the Forward icon to navigate to the end.

If you have a text keyboard connected to your device, press:

  • the Space bar to start and stop playback
  • < or > to navigate a bar backwards or forwards, respectively
  • 0 to navigate to the beginning of the score

StaffPad will respect all tempo marks, repeats, and D.C./D.S./Coda markings in your score, including indications such as “Swing” or “Straight” to turn swing-style playback on or off.

By default, StaffPad will continuously scroll the score across the screen during playback, with the playhead remaining in the center of the screen. Should you wish instead for the playhead to scroll from left to right across the score and the music to move forward by screenfuls at a time, go to StaffPad’s Settings and switch off Scroll the score during playback.
